Algarve behind Alentejo in tourism awards

For the second time in a row the Algarve was beaten by the Alentejo to win the prize for best national tourism region of Portugal, considered as the 'Oscars' of national tourism.
Alentejo Tourism took the first prize with the regions of Algarve, Azores and Madeira on th e places behind.
The president of Alentejo Tourism, António Ceia da Silva, received the prize 'Tourism Personality 2011', while the 'Santos Belmiro Career Award' was awarded to George Potamianos, the founder of Classic International Cruises.
The Jury of the Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2011, consisting of 15 judges including former Secretaries of State for Tourism Bernardo Trindade, Luís Correia da Silva, and Vitor Neto the president of the Hospitality Association of Portugal.

Best five star hotel: Ritz Four Seasons Lisbon

Best four star hotel: Porto Mare, Funchal

Best three star hotel: Grande Hotel do Porto

Best resort: Penha Longa Hotel & Spa in Sintra

Best hotel chain: Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts

Best golf course: Quinta do Lago, Laranjal, Algarve
Europcar won the award for best rent-a-car and travel Agência Abreu won two trophies: best new agency and best travel agency. The prize for the best tour operator went to Solférias and the best travel website was Travelocity.
The Publituris Portugal Travel Awards also honored state airline TAP as best airline, and Easyjet as the best low cost airline.
