Portuguese street markets are an integral part of life. Most of the markets are held in the town's main square on a weekly basis, and sometimes even more frequently. They sell a wide range of goods such as food, clothes, handicrafts and antiques.

The majority of markets take place in the morning, although in tourist areas they often continue through until the late afternoon. Markets in the Algarve Region worth to visit are: Albufeira (held on the second Saturday of each month), Lagos (first Saturday), Loulé (Saturdays) and Portimão (Sundays).

Most of Portuguese towns and cities also have covered market places which are open during the week and mostly on Saturday as well, selling a great variety of produce such as fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, and sometimes handicrafts and clothes.
